CliniClue File Locations

The following tables identify the location of different types of files that CliniClue installs and uses when it is running. Many of these locations are configurable so the table and some depend on Windows operating system configuration settings.

Table 1. Main Folders used by CliniClue . This table describes the main folders that CliniClue Xplore creates or uses. Other folders described in subsequent tables have locations that are relative to these folders.
Location name Usage Default Location
CliniClueProg

The folder in which the CliniClue Xplore application is installed when the setup program is first run.

The executable programs are installed in this folder.

Built-in folder (see subsequent table) are sub-folders of this folder and contain files installed with and required by the programs.

The location of this folder is determined on installation and can only be changed by uninstalling CliniClue Xplore (and any CliniClue add-on applications) and the reinstalling in a different location.

A sub-folder of the Program Files application folder as specified by Windows.

[Program Files]\cic\CliniClue 2009

In standard English language Windows installation this is:

C:\Program Files\cic\CliniClue 2009

These folders may be hidden from view in Windows Explorer depending on your system settings.

In Windows Vista and Windows 7, the content of these folders may be supplemented by files in a use specific 'virtual folder' specific to individual user:

C:\Users\[UserName]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\cic\CliniClue.

CicSharedProg

Shared third party library files used by more than one CIC Ltd application are installed in this folder.

These files are always installed in this folder. The installation path selection does not override this.

A sub-folder of the Program Files application folder as specified by Windows.

[Program Files]\cic\shared

CliniClueLocal

The default folder in which CliniClue Xplore stores information that is used and amended by using CliniClue software.

The location of this folder is determined on installation and stored as simple plain text in [CliniClueProg]\settings.txt.

Defaults to:
  • The Shared Documents folder
If this in not a writable folder an alternative default is used:
  • The current user's Documents folder.

A sub-folder of the Common Documents folder specified by Windows.

[CommonDocuments]\CliniClue

The location of this folder differs according to the version of the Windows operating system. For example, for English language installations of the following versions of Windows:
  • Windows XP:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\CliniClue
  • Windows Vista and Windows 7:
    • C:\Users\Public\Documents\CliniClue
ClueData

One or more ClueData folders may be specified. CliniClue Xplore will search these folder for sub-folders containing SNOMED CT content in the ClueData2009 format.

The ClueData folder:
  • Must be called 'ClueData'
  • Must contain sub-folders that include ClueData2009 files for one or more SNOMED CT Editions.
    • A valid ClueData2009 sub-folder must contain a library.clu and shelf.clu file.
    • If the folder contains a file called ClueDat.clu it is an old version ClueData file and cannot be accessed using CliniClue Xplore.
  • Must contain the International Edition ClueData and other required sub-folders that are referenced by all the Extension ClueData sub-folders.

A single ClueData root folder is created on installation. Alternative ClueData location can be specified if required using the 'Edition Selection' program. This allows ClueData to be placed on a disk drive with adequate disk capacity.

All the Editions that depend on the same release of the International Edition must be in the same ClueData folder.

It is possible to specify a ClueData folder on a shared network drive. However, as the final part of the pathname must be 'ClueData', either the share-name must be ClueData or the shared location must contain a ClueData sub-folder. Also note that CliniClue will perform less well using a network drive for ClueData.

The default ClueData folder is created as a sub-folder of the CliniClueLocal folder (see above).

[CliniClueLocal]\ClueData

For example:

  • Windows XP:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\CliniClue\ClueData
  • Windows Vista and Windows 7:
    • C:\Users\Public\Documents\CliniClue\ClueData
CliniClueSettings A folder in which CliniClue Xplore configuration settings are stored and maintained.

Local settings files are stored in this folder. These local settings include the CliniCluePath.xml file which specifies the location of other folders.

By default, temporary files and many local customizations are stored in sub-folders of this folder.

The location of this folder is determined automatically on installation and cannot be changed. However, the locations of some local customization sub-folders and files may be changed by amending the [Settings]\CliniCluePath.xml file.

The Settings sub-folder of the CliniClueLocal folder specified as above.

[CliniClueLocal]\settings

For example:

  • Windows XP:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\CliniClue\settings
  • Windows Vista and Windows 7:
    • C:\Users\Public\Documents\CliniClue\settings
CliniClueTemp

A folder in which CliniClue stores temporary files.

Unless CliniClue Xplore is running (or being installed or configured), the files in this folder and any of its sub-folders can be deleted without loss of functionality.

The location of this folder and its individual sub-folders can be modified by amending the [CliniClueSettings]\CliniCluePath.xml file.

The default CliniClueTemp folder is created as a sub-folder of the CliniClueLocal folder (see above).

[CliniClueLocal]\temp

For example:

  • Windows XP:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\CliniClue\temp
  • Windows Vista and Windows 7:
    • C:\Users\Public\Documents\CliniClue\temp
CliniClueDoc A folder that contains sub-folders containing documents, imports and exports that are readily accessible to users.

The default CliniClueDoc folder is created as a sub-folder of either the Windows Public (All Users) Documents folder or in the current user's Documents folder. By default the Windows Public Documents folder is used. The current user's Documents folder is used if a user does not have read and write permission in the Public folder.

The location of the CliniClueDoc folder is fixed. However, the location of each of its sub-folders can be changed by amending the [CliniClueSetttings]\CliniCluePath.xml file.

In a standard English installation of Windows the full default path depends on the operating system:
  • Windows XP:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\DocumentsCliniClue
  • Windows Vista and Windows 7:
    • C:\Users\Public\Documents\CliniClue
Table 2. Built-in folders. The table describes the folders that contain built-in settings and other materials that are provided with CliniClue Xplore or with one of the add-on packages. • Located as sub-folders of the built-in [template] folder (see Built-in folders).

    • The content of the files in these folders may be changed by use of CliniClue Xplore or CliniClue add-on programs.
    • The content of the files in these folders may updated manually. However, manual changes should only be made after saving pre-existing copies of these files.
    • To protect local data we recommend backing up some or all of the data in these folders.

The local folder locations follow the conventions described earlier in this table.

The default location of the local [xslt] folder is:
  • [CliniClueLocal]\settings\xslt

The fixed locations of the built-in versions of these files does not follow the convention specified in this table. Instead (as noted in the table of built-in folder) these are immediate sub-folders of [CliniClueProg].

help

xslt
resource

Contains database files used by CliniClue Xplore to support CrossMap and Comment views. CliniClue Xtra enhancements may place other database files in this folder.

The built-in resource folder included in the installation contains:
  • An empty CrossMaps table
    • This provides the structure for the required tables but does not included any maps. This allows the layout controls to behave correctly but does not display and maps.
  • A Comments table that include:
    • Some introductory comments - linked to the root concept ('SNOMED CT Concept'
    • The 'text definitions' as distributed by the IHTSDO which shows free-text descriptions that apply to some SNOMED CT concepts.

The built-in location follows the convention described earlier in this table and only contains a starter or empty database.

The active databases are in the local folder. By default the location of this is as a sub-folder of [CliniClueLocal].
  • [CliniClueLocal]\resource
